Overview

Mr Plumber provides the complete plumbing scope for bathroom renovations across the Eastern Suburbs. From relocating water and waste lines during rough-in to installing premium tapware and fixtures at fit-off, we work with your builder or tiler to deliver a bathroom that looks and functions beautifully.

The Plumbing Heart of Every Bathroom Renovation

A beautiful bathroom renovation starts behind the walls. Before a single tile is laid or a tapware finish is chosen, the plumbing must be planned and installed with precision. Water supply lines must reach the exact position of every tap, shower valve and toilet cistern. Waste pipes must fall at the correct gradient to ensure reliable drainage. Vent pipes must be correctly sized and positioned to prevent gurgling and slow drainage.

Get the plumbing right, and your new bathroom will function flawlessly for decades. Get it wrong, and you face leaks behind walls, fixtures that do not align with tiles, drainage that gurgles or backs up, and the prospect of ripping out finished work to fix concealed plumbing errors.

Mr Plumber has been the renovation plumber of choice for builders, designers and homeowners across Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs for years. We understand the critical sequencing of a bathroom renovation and deliver precise, reliable plumbing work that your builder and tiler can build upon with confidence.

Our Bathroom Renovation Plumbing Services

Pre-Renovation Design Consultation

Before demolition begins, we review your renovation plans — whether they are architect-drawn blueprints or a sketch on the back of an envelope — and provide expert advice on:

  • Fixture placement. Where can the toilet, shower, bath and vanity go, given the existing pipe routes and structural constraints?
  • Pipe relocation feasibility. Can the waste be relocated to the other side of the room? Will the fall work? Where does the new vent go?
  • Hot water adequacy. Will your existing hot water system handle the new rainfall shower, the freestanding bath and the second basin? If not, what upgrade is needed?
  • Code compliance. Are there minimum clearances, tempering valve requirements or ventilation standards that affect the layout?

This consultation can save thousands of dollars by identifying constraints and opportunities before the renovation begins.

Rough-In Plumbing

The rough-in stage is when all concealed plumbing is installed — before the walls are closed up and tiled. This is the most critical phase of the bathroom plumbing scope and includes:

Water supply installation. We run hot and cold water lines in copper or PEX-A pipe to the exact position of every fixture — shower valve, basin taps, bath spout, toilet cistern and washing machine connection. Pipe runs are pressure tested to 1,500 kPa (well above the minimum required by AS/NZS 3500) to ensure there are no leaks before the walls are closed.

Waste and vent installation. Waste pipes are installed with the correct fall (1:40 for 50mm pipe, 1:60 for 100mm pipe) and connected to the main stack or building sewer. Vent pipes are run to atmosphere to prevent siphonage and ensure reliable drainage.

Fixture blocking. Wall-mounted fixtures — wall-hung toilets, wall basins and shower rails — require solid timber blocking concealed within the wall frame. We coordinate with the builder to ensure blocking is positioned correctly for every fixture.

Waterproofing Coordination

While waterproofing is typically carried out by a specialist applicator, the plumber plays a critical role. All pipe penetrations through the waterproof membrane must be sealed correctly using puddle flanges and compatible sealants. We install puddle flanges on all shower waste and floor waste connections before the waterproofer arrives, ensuring a watertight seal between the plumbing and the membrane.

We also inspect the completed waterproofing before tiling to confirm that all penetrations are properly sealed — catching potential issues before they are buried under tiles and become expensive to rectify.

Fit-Off — Fixture Installation

After tiling and grouting are complete, we return for the fit-off stage — installing all visible fixtures and connecting them to the concealed rough-in plumbing. This includes:

  • Shower. Shower mixer or diverter valve, rainfall and hand-held heads, shower rails and wall outlets.
  • Basin. Wall or vanity-mounted basin, basin mixer tap, waste and P-trap.
  • Toilet. Floor or wall-mounted pan, cistern or concealed cistern button, supply connection.
  • Bath. Freestanding, inset or corner bath, bath spout and mixer, waste and overflow.
  • Accessories. Heated towel rails (hydronic or electric connection), toilet roll holders, soap dispensers.

Every fixture is installed level, plumb and aligned with the tile layout. We use the exact models and finishes specified in your renovation plan and handle every brand from mass-market (Caroma, Dorf) to premium (Grohe, Hansgrohe, Brodware, Sussex).

Working With Heritage Bathrooms

Renovating a bathroom in a heritage-listed or period home — common in Paddington, Woollahra, Surry Hills and Darlinghurst — presents unique challenges. Original cast iron waste pipes may need to be replaced or relined. Wall cavities may be too shallow for modern concealed cisterns. Heritage conservation plans may restrict visible fixture styles.

We have completed numerous heritage bathroom renovations across the Eastern Suburbs and understand how to work within these constraints. We can source period-appropriate fixtures, work with existing pipe routes where possible and provide creative solutions for the plumbing challenges that older buildings present.

Budgeting for Bathroom Plumbing

The plumbing component of a bathroom renovation typically represents 15 to 25 percent of the total project cost. The main variables are:

  • Pipe relocation. Moving a toilet waste is the most expensive relocation because it involves a 100mm pipe that needs adequate fall. Shower and basin relocations are generally straightforward.
  • Fixture quality. A Grohe or Hansgrohe shower mixer costs significantly more than a Dorf or Caroma unit, but delivers superior performance and longevity.
  • Complexity. A freestanding bath with floor-mounted spout, a wall-hung toilet with concealed cistern and a niche with recessed pipe work all add complexity and cost compared to a standard layout.

We provide a detailed plumbing quote broken down by task so you know exactly what each element costs and can make informed decisions about where to invest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a plumber for a bathroom renovation?
Yes. All plumbing work in a bathroom renovation — water pipe relocation, waste pipe installation, fixture connection and gas work (if applicable) — must be carried out by a licensed plumber under NSW law.
How long does the plumbing take in a bathroom renovation?
Rough-in typically takes 1-2 days depending on complexity. Fit-off (installing fixtures after tiling) takes another 1-2 days. We schedule both visits to align with your renovation timeline.
Can you relocate my shower or toilet?
In most cases, yes. We can relocate water and waste connections to suit your new layout. There may be constraints with waste pipe falls and vent positioning, which we identify during the design consultation.
Do you supply tapware and fixtures?
We can supply fixtures from Reece, Tradelink and specialty showrooms, or install fixtures you have purchased yourself. We are happy to advise on quality and compatibility.
