Gas Leak Detection and Repair

If you smell gas — the distinctive rotten-egg odour of the mercaptan odorant added to natural gas — you should evacuate immediately, avoid operating any electrical switches and call 000. Once the area is declared safe, call Mr Plumber.

We use Sensit electronic gas detectors that can identify gas concentrations as low as 1 part per million. This is significantly more sensitive than traditional soap-and-bubble testing and allows us to find even the smallest leaks in concealed pipework, fittings and gas meter connections.

Once located, we repair the leak — whether it is a corroded fitting, a cracked copper joint or a failed appliance connection — pressure test the system and issue a compliance certificate confirming the installation is safe.

If you are renovating, extending or landscaping your property, you may need your gas meter relocated. We coordinate with your gas network provider (Jemena in Sydney) to arrange meter relocation and reinstall all downstream pipework to the new meter position.

Carbon Monoxide Testing

Gas appliances that are not properly maintained or ventilated can produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide — an odourless, colourless gas that can be fatal. We test for carbon monoxide emissions using calibrated gas analysers and can identify faulty flues, blocked vents and malfunctioning burners before they become a health hazard.

We recommend annual carbon monoxide testing for all gas appliances, particularly gas heaters, fireplaces and hot water systems in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces.

Gas Safety in Older Eastern Suburbs Properties

Many homes in Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Potts Point and Paddington were originally built with gas lighting in the late 1800s and early 1900s. While those original gas pipes have long been decommissioned, subsequent gas installations spanning decades mean that some properties have a patchwork of pipe materials — galvanised steel, copper and even lead — of varying ages and conditions.

Compliance Certificates — What You Need to Know

Under the Gas and Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act 2017 (NSW), all gas fitting work must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter who issues a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) to the homeowner and lodges a copy with the relevant authority.

A compliance certificate confirms that the gas installation has been:

• Installed in accordance with AS/NZS 5601
• Pressure tested and found to be gas-tight
• Purged of air and filled with gas safely
• Tested for correct appliance operation

When do you need a compliance certificate? Every time gas work is performed — new installations, modifications, repairs, appliance connections and disconnections. There are no exceptions.
