Overview

Mr Plumber's licensed gas fitters handle everything from gas leak detection and pipe repairs to new gas line installations and appliance connections. We hold Type A and LP Gas licences and issue compliance certificates for all gas work across Sydney's Eastern Suburbs.

Professional Gas Plumbing for Eastern Suburbs Homes and Businesses

Gas work is not something to take chances with. A poorly fitted gas connection or an undetected gas leak can result in carbon monoxide poisoning, fire or explosion. That is why NSW law requires all gas fitting work to be carried out by a licensed gas fitter who issues a compliance certificate on completion.

Mr Plumber’s gas plumbers hold current Type A and LP Gas licences and carry out all gas work in strict compliance with AS/NZS 5601 (Gas Installations). From simple gas bayonet installations to complete gas reticulation for new homes, we handle every aspect of residential and commercial gas plumbing across Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.

Gas Services We Provide

Gas Leak Detection and Repair

If you smell gas — the distinctive rotten-egg odour of the mercaptan odorant added to natural gas — you should evacuate immediately, avoid operating any electrical switches and call 000. Once the area is declared safe, call Mr Plumber.

We use Sensit electronic gas detectors that can identify gas concentrations as low as 1 part per million. This is significantly more sensitive than traditional soap-and-bubble testing and allows us to find even the smallest leaks in concealed pipework, fittings and gas meter connections.

Once located, we repair the leak — whether it is a corroded fitting, a cracked copper joint or a failed appliance connection — pressure test the system and issue a compliance certificate confirming the installation is safe.

New Gas Line Installation

Whether you are renovating your kitchen in Paddington, adding a gas fireplace in your Woollahra lounge room or running gas to an outdoor BBQ area in Coogee, we design and install gas pipework to suit your needs.

Our gas line installations include load calculations to ensure adequate gas supply to all connected appliances, compliant pipework routing (copper or PE pipe depending on application), proper support and protection where lines pass through walls and floors, and full pressure testing and certification.

Gas Appliance Installation and Connection

We install and connect all types of gas appliances, including:

  • Gas cooktops and ovens — Miele, Bosch, Fisher & Paykel, Smeg and all other brands.
  • Gas hot water systems — Rheem, Rinnai, Bosch Hydropower, Dux.
  • Gas heaters — ducted, wall-mounted and portable (bayonet connection).
  • Gas fireplaces — Real Flame, Jetmaster, Regency.
  • Outdoor gas BBQs — dedicated gas bayonet and line installation.

Every appliance connection includes a gas soundness test and compliance certificate.

Gas Meter Relocations

If you are renovating, extending or landscaping your property, you may need your gas meter relocated. We coordinate with your gas network provider (Jemena in Sydney) to arrange meter relocation and reinstall all downstream pipework to the new meter position.

Carbon Monoxide Testing

Gas appliances that are not properly maintained or ventilated can produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide — an odourless, colourless gas that can be fatal. We test for carbon monoxide emissions using calibrated gas analysers and can identify faulty flues, blocked vents and malfunctioning burners before they become a health hazard.

We recommend annual carbon monoxide testing for all gas appliances, particularly gas heaters, fireplaces and hot water systems in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces.

Gas Safety in Older Eastern Suburbs Properties

Many homes in Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Potts Point and Paddington were originally built with gas lighting in the late 1800s and early 1900s. While those original gas pipes have long been decommissioned, subsequent gas installations spanning decades mean that some properties have a patchwork of pipe materials — galvanised steel, copper and even lead — of varying ages and conditions.

If your Eastern Suburbs home has not had a gas safety inspection in the past five years, we strongly recommend booking one. We inspect all visible gas pipework, fittings and appliance connections, test for leaks, check for adequate ventilation and identify any non-compliant installations that should be upgraded.

Compliance Certificates — What You Need to Know

Under the Gas and Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act 2017 (NSW), all gas fitting work must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter who issues a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) to the homeowner and lodges a copy with the relevant authority.

A compliance certificate confirms that the gas installation has been:

  • Installed in accordance with AS/NZS 5601
  • Pressure tested and found to be gas-tight
  • Purged of air and filled with gas safely
  • Tested for correct appliance operation

When do you need a compliance certificate? Every time gas work is performed — new installations, modifications, repairs, appliance connections and disconnections. There are no exceptions.

Mr Plumber issues a compliance certificate with every gas job at no additional charge. We also keep records of all certificates issued, so if you need a copy in future (for sale of property, insurance claim or regulatory audit), we can provide one promptly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a compliance certificate for gas work?
Yes. Under NSW legislation, all gas fitting work requires a compliance certificate issued by a licensed gas fitter. This includes new installations, modifications and repairs to gas lines and appliances.
Can you convert my home from electric to gas cooking?
Yes. We run new gas lines from your meter to the kitchen, install the appropriate gas outlet and connect your new gas cooktop. We also handle the necessary compliance certification.
How do I know if I have a gas leak?
Signs of a gas leak include the smell of rotten eggs (odorant added to natural gas), a hissing sound near gas pipes or appliances, dead vegetation near buried gas lines, or a higher-than-expected gas bill.
Can you install a gas bayonet for a portable heater or BBQ?
Absolutely. We install gas bayonet points for indoor heaters and outdoor BBQs, including running the gas line from the nearest supply point.
