Overview

Leaking roofs and blocked gutters cause more water damage to Eastern Suburbs homes than any other plumbing issue. Mr Plumber's roof plumbing team repairs leaking roof flashings, replaces rusted gutters, installs new downpipes and clears blocked gutters to keep your home dry and protected.

Protecting Your Eastern Suburbs Home From the Top Down

Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs cop some of the city’s most intense coastal weather. Summer storms bring heavy downpours and strong winds, while winter brings persistent rain that tests every roof, gutter and flashing on your home. When your roof plumbing fails, water finds its way into ceiling cavities, wall framing and eventually living spaces — causing damage that is expensive to remediate and disruptive to your life.

Mr Plumber’s roof plumbing team specialises in finding and fixing roof leaks, replacing worn-out gutters, installing new downpipes and ensuring your stormwater system carries water away from your home safely and efficiently.

Common Roof Plumbing Problems

Leaking Flashings

Flashings are the metal strips that seal the junctions between your roof and other surfaces — walls, chimneys, skylights and where two roof planes meet (valleys). Over time, flashings corrode, lift in wind or separate from the surfaces they are meant to seal. The result is water infiltration that can track a considerable distance from the point of entry before showing up as a ceiling stain.

In heritage homes across Paddington and Surry Hills, lead flashings from original construction may be over 100 years old and well past their serviceable life. We replace them with modern Colorbond or lead flashings that match the period style of your home.

Rusted or Damaged Gutters

Gutters take a beating from the coastal salt air that blows across the Eastern Suburbs. Older galvanised steel gutters corrode from the inside out, developing pinholes and rust-through that cause water to overflow onto fascia boards and external walls. Sagging gutters — where brackets have failed or timber fascia has rotted — pool water instead of draining it, accelerating the corrosion and overflow problem.

We replace damaged gutters with Colorbond steel in your choice of colour and profile. For heritage homes, we can source quad, half-round and OG profile gutters that maintain the period character of the building.

Blocked Gutters and Downpipes

Leaves from the mature trees that line Eastern Suburbs streets — particularly paperbarks, liquidambars and jacarandas — are the primary cause of blocked gutters. When gutters block, water overflows directly against the building, saturating external walls, pooling against foundations and potentially entering subfloor areas.

Blocked downpipes are equally problematic. A single blocked downpipe forces water to back up through the entire gutter run, overflowing at the lowest point. We clear blocked gutters and downpipes and can install gutter guards to dramatically reduce the frequency of gutter maintenance.

Valley Iron Failures

Roof valleys — the V-shaped channels where two roof planes meet — carry a disproportionate volume of water during heavy rain. When the valley iron corrodes, cracks or separates from the roof sheets, water pours into the ceiling cavity. Valley repairs require careful work to ensure the new iron slides correctly under the existing roof sheets and maintains a watertight seal.

Our Roof Plumbing Services

Gutter Replacement

We supply and install Colorbond gutters in all standard profiles — quad, fascia, half-round and OG — in your choice of colour. Our installations include new gutter brackets at code-compliant spacing, internal and external corners, stop ends, outlets and pop riveted joints sealed with neutral-cure silicone.

All new gutter installations are set with the correct fall (1:500 minimum as per AS/NZS 3500.3) to ensure water flows toward the outlets without pooling.

Downpipe Installation and Repair

We install round and square Colorbond downpipes sized to handle the roof catchment area they serve. Downpipe installations include wall brackets, elbows, rainwater heads (where required) and connection to the stormwater drainage system. We can also relocate downpipes if they are in the way of a renovation or extension.

Gutter Guard Installation

Gutter guards dramatically reduce the amount of debris that enters your gutters, reducing the frequency of cleaning from multiple times per year to once every two to three years. We install aluminium mesh and micro-mesh guards that fit over the top of the gutter, allowing water in while keeping leaves, twigs, bird nests and possums out.

Roof Leak Investigation

Not all roof leaks are obvious. Water can enter at one point and track along rafters, purlins and sarking for metres before dripping onto the ceiling below. We inspect the roof from above and the ceiling cavity from below, tracing the water path back to the point of entry. Where necessary, we use hose testing to simulate rain on specific sections of the roof to confirm the leak source.

Stormwater Connection

Gutters and downpipes are only half the system. The water they collect needs to be directed away from your building through a properly designed stormwater drainage system. We connect downpipes to stormwater drains, install pits and grates, and ensure the system has adequate capacity to handle the roof catchment area — critical during the intense storms the Eastern Suburbs experience.

Working With Heritage and Period Homes

The Eastern Suburbs are home to some of Sydney’s finest heritage architecture — Victorian terraces in Paddington, Federation homes in Woollahra, Art Deco apartments in Bondi and Georgian mansions in Bellevue Hill. Roof plumbing work on these properties requires an understanding of period materials, profiles and proportions.

Our team has extensive experience working on heritage-listed and contributory buildings. We source period-appropriate gutter profiles, use compatible materials and can work within heritage conservation management plans where required.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my roof is leaking?
Signs include water stains on ceilings, peeling paint, damp patches on walls, dripping during rain, and mould or musty odours in the ceiling cavity.
Can you match my existing gutters?
Yes. We supply Colorbond gutters in all standard colours (Monument, Basalt, Woodland Grey, Surfmist, etc.) and can match heritage profiles for period homes.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
We recommend cleaning gutters at least twice a year — in autumn after leaves fall and in spring before storm season. If you have overhanging trees, quarterly cleaning may be necessary.
Do you install gutter guards?
Yes. We install mesh and micro-mesh gutter guards that prevent leaves and debris from entering the gutter while allowing water to flow freely.
