Overview

A running toilet wastes up to 60,000 litres of water per year. A dripping tap is not far behind. Mr Plumber fixes running toilets, leaking taps, broken cisterns and faulty mixers quickly and affordably across Sydney's Eastern Suburbs — usually within an hour of arrival.

Small Leaks, Big Consequences

It is easy to ignore a dripping tap or a toilet that runs for a few seconds after each flush. But those minor annoyances add up to serious water waste and inflated bills. A single dripping tap losing one drop per second wastes over 12,000 litres of water per year. A running toilet can waste five times that amount. In a city where Sydney Water charges tiered rates for excess consumption, a simple repair can save you hundreds of dollars annually.

Mr Plumber makes toilet and tap repairs easy. We carry a comprehensive range of parts on our vans, quote a fixed price before starting and complete most repairs within 30 to 60 minutes. Whether you are in a heritage terrace in Paddington, a beachside apartment in Bondi or a family home in Randwick, we have your plumbing covered.

Toilet Repairs We Handle

Running Toilets

A toilet that runs continuously or refills intermittently is almost always caused by one of three components:

Outlet valve (flush valve). This is the rubber seal at the bottom of the cistern that lifts when you press the flush button and drops back down to seal the cistern after flushing. Over time, the rubber hardens, warps or develops calcium deposits that prevent a watertight seal. Replacement takes about 15 minutes.

Inlet valve (fill valve). This valve controls the water flowing into the cistern. When it fails, it either does not shut off — causing the cistern to overflow into the pan via the overflow tube — or it cycles on and off intermittently. We replace inlet valves with quality Fluidmaster or Caroma units.

Flush mechanism. The button, cable or lever that triggers the flush can become misaligned or damaged, causing incomplete flushing or continuous running. We adjust or replace the mechanism to restore proper function.

Blocked Toilets

A blocked toilet is one of the most common and most urgent household plumbing calls. We use specialised toilet augers (closet augers) that navigate the toilet’s internal trap without scratching the ceramic. For blockages deeper in the waste line, we use CCTV cameras and hydro jetting to clear the obstruction.

Leaking Toilet Base

Water pooling around the base of the toilet usually indicates a failed wax ring or pan collar seal between the toilet and the floor flange. Left unrepaired, this can cause water damage to the subfloor structure. We remove the toilet, replace the seal and re-set the pan to a watertight finish.

Cracked Cisterns and Pans

A crack in the ceramic cistern or pan is not repairable — the fixture must be replaced. We supply and install replacement toilet suites from Caroma, Duravit, Villeroy & Boch and other brands, including back-to-wall, wall-hung and close-coupled configurations. All replacements are WELS-rated for water efficiency.

Tap Repairs We Handle

Dripping Taps

The repair depends on the type of tap:

Washer taps (traditional). Most older taps in Eastern Suburbs homes use a rubber washer that compresses against a brass seat to stop the flow. When the washer wears, the tap drips. We replace the washer and resurface the seat if it is scored or pitted. This is a 10 to 15-minute repair.

Ceramic disc taps. Modern taps use ceramic disc cartridges instead of rubber washers. These are more durable but can still fail, usually due to grit or calcium scoring the disc faces. We replace the cartridge with a genuine or compatible unit.

Mixer taps. Single-lever mixer taps contain a cartridge that controls both temperature and flow. A dripping mixer usually needs a new cartridge. We carry cartridges for all common brands including Grohe, Moen, Dorf and Methven.

Stiff or Hard-to-Turn Taps

Taps that are difficult to operate often have corroded spindles, seized headgear or worn O-rings. In many cases, a service and re-grease is all that is needed. If the internal components are too worn, we can replace the headgear or recommend a tap upgrade.

Low Water Pressure at a Tap

If one tap has low pressure while others flow normally, the issue is usually a blocked aerator (the mesh screen at the tap outlet), a partially closed isolation valve, or debris trapped in the tap body. We diagnose and resolve the issue on the spot.

When to Upgrade Rather Than Repair

While we are always happy to repair existing fixtures, there are situations where replacement makes more sense:

  • Your taps are original to a pre-1980s home and genuine parts are no longer available. A modern replacement tap gives you decades of trouble-free service.
  • Your toilet is a single-flush model. Dual-flush toilets use 3 litres for a half flush and 4.5 litres for a full flush, compared to 11+ litres for old single-flush models. The water savings pay for the new toilet within a year or two.
  • You are renovating your bathroom. If you are updating tiles, vanities and fittings, it makes sense to install new taps and toilet suites at the same time rather than trying to work around old plumbing.

We supply fixtures from leading brands available through Reece, Tradelink and Highgrove, and can recommend options that suit your budget and bathroom style.

Water Efficiency Ratings (WELS)

Under the Australian Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) scheme, all new taps, toilets and showerheads sold in Australia carry a water efficiency rating. Higher-rated fixtures use less water and reduce your bills.

FixtureBest RatingWater Use
Dual-flush toilet4 stars3/4.5 litres per flush
Basin mixer tap6 stars4.5 litres per minute
Showerhead3 stars6-7 litres per minute

We can help you choose WELS-rated fixtures that deliver great performance while minimising water consumption — good for your wallet and for Sydney’s water supply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my toilet constantly running?
The most common causes are a worn outlet valve (flush valve washer), a faulty inlet valve that does not shut off, or a misaligned flush button mechanism. All of these are straightforward repairs.
How much water does a running toilet waste?
A continuously running toilet can waste 60,000 litres or more per year — adding hundreds of dollars to your water bill. Fixing it promptly saves water and money.
Can you fix a dripping tap?
Yes. In most cases, a dripping tap needs a new washer, O-ring or ceramic cartridge. We carry parts for all common tap brands and can usually complete the repair in under 30 minutes.
Should I repair or replace my old toilet?
If your toilet is a single-flush model installed before 2005, upgrading to a modern dual-flush suite will save approximately 35,000 litres of water per year for a typical household. We can advise on the best replacement options.
